Food Groups |
Good health depends on a healthy and varied diet, which also helps you maintain
a healthy body weight. A balanced and nutritional diet also help to keep the
risk of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease at bay.
Different people like different foods and like to prepare the same foods in
different ways.
Culture, family background, religion, moral beliefs, cost, convenience and
availability of food, life experiences, food intolerances, and allergies affect
people's food choices.
Nutrients (the building blocks of whole foods) and other biologically active
constituents are essential for the growth and development of our bodies and the
maintenance of its functions.
Each nutrient has particular functions and is needed in various quantities.
The quantities or nutritional requirements differ between groups of people, and
between individuals.
These differences are related to an individual’s age, sex, level of activity and
health status.
The classes of nutrients are, carbohydrates, proteins, lipids (fats and oils),
vitamins, minerals, non-nutritive substances and water.
Carbohydrate, proteins, lipids are macronutrients needed in large quantities.
Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients needed in smaller quantities.
There are 5 food groups from which to choose a variety of foods.
Foods are grouped based on having a similar nutrient content. No foods need to
be excluded from the diet of healthy active people; rather healthier choices
should be made and foods eaten in moderate quantities (see Healthy Eating
Guidelines below).
